Juliana Oelkers 2/13/17

Today we started off class by getting our laptops and logging on to google classroom. Although it was a shortened period, we got a lot done. Once we were all settled Mr. Rivers began talking about our organization for our senior paper and reminded us that they are due on Friday. To help us get a better idea of what our organization should look like he showed us a student's outline as an example. Her essay analyzed the film One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest with a psychology lens. In order to evaluate the outline Mr. Rivers gave each group two note cards with topics on them. As a group we had to find one good thing and one bad thing in the outline about each topic.

My group's topics were synthesis of film and research and explicit connection between analysis and topic sentences. After discussing as a group Mr. Rivers split us into different groups to further discuss different topics and better analyze the outline. In our groups we were all able to agree on what needed improvement and what worked well in the outline. After that we discussed it as a class. There were six topics and each of the six groups had to pick one topic and share a good thing and a bad thing they found with the class. As a class we agreed that overall her use of scholarly evidence was good because it was directly related to the thesis and topic sentences. We also agreed that her use of film evidence was not specific enough. If she used quotes or paraphrased a scene as opposed to just stating what happened, it would have been more specific, which is always better. This was very helpful because we got to see what to do and what not to do and how to fix our own outlines before we hand them in.
